SUCCESS STORY: DRĄSEIKIAI QUARRY

Challenge

The client faced the necessity of replacing two old 250 kW frequency converters that control the motors managing the gravel extraction process in the quarry. All extraction and control equipment is installed on a vessel, which is used to extract gravel and transport it to shore. The main challenge was to balance the loads between the two motors to avoid failures caused by unbalanced loading.

Solution

Installed products: Frequency converters SD7K046050 (two units)

Installation information: The frequency converters were installed in the existing cabinet, utilizing the available braking resistors. The solution ensured even load distribution between the two motors connected to a single gearbox.

Situation

Drąseikiai Quarry, located in Kaunas district, specializes in the extraction and transportation of minerals. The quarry operates under unique conditions – gravel is extracted and transported using a vessel equipped with all extraction and control equipment. This is a complex and energy-intensive process requiring advanced technological solutions to ensure operational efficiency and reliability.

Operational Process

– During extraction, an empty bucket is lowered into the water.

– Gravel is collected and lifted from the water.

– The lifted gravel is discharged onto a special conveyor and then transported to shore.

– All of this is performed by two motors connected to a single gearbox, controlled by two frequency converters.

Challenge

The client needed to replace two old 250 kW frequency converters that had failed and are no longer manufactured. Repair would have been more expensive than purchasing new converters. The new frequency converters had to fit into the existing space and make maximum use of available components. The greatest challenge was ensuring even load distribution between the two motors connected to a single gearbox. If the load is unbalanced, the entire load falls on one motor, but a single motor is unable to perform the work and a failure occurs. Operations stop and the client incurs costs and losses.

Simeksa Solution

Simeksa proposed and installed two SD7K046050 frequency converters. These converters were installed in the existing cabinet, utilizing the available braking resistors. The installation process was carried out to maximize the use of existing components and ensure seamless integration of the converters into the existing system. Special attention was paid to even load distribution between the two motors to avoid potential failures and ensure long-term equipment reliability.

Results

Following project implementation, the extraction and transportation equipment on the Drąseikiai Quarry vessel operates smoothly and reliably. Both motors work in a balanced manner, ensuring even load distribution. As a result, downtime due to failures has been reduced and equipment operational efficiency has increased. These changes not only improved the quality of the extraction process but also reduced energy consumption.

Future Plans

Drąseikiai Quarry plans to continue improving its operational processes, aiming for even greater efficiency. Future plans include upgrading the old control system and optimizing energy consumption to achieve even better results and ensure the company’s long-term competitiveness in the market.
