Problem
Maintaining a constant and reliable water supply to medical departments, which is essential for hospital operations. The existing system, consisting of only two water pumps, was inadequate, especially in cases where the main water supply was interrupted due to power supply disruptions. In such situations, a more robust and energy-efficient solution was needed to ensure continuous water flow, reduce pump load, and lower operating and maintenance costs.
Solution
Two additional water pumps were installed with Optidrive Eco drives controlling them. Integrated Optiflow technology ensures flexible pump control. Thus, when demand is low, it reduces the number of pumps required while ensuring continuous flow. If one pump fails, due to flexible Optidrive pump control, its workload is taken over by another.
Situation
Rambam Academic Hospital, in Israel, required a reliable and efficient water supply system to perform various medical operations across multiple floors. The hospital faced significant challenges in ensuring uninterrupted water supply, especially during power outages, which is critical for maintaining emergency and medical care services. To address these challenges, the hospital sought a solution that would not only ensure reliable water supply, but also increase energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.
The hospital operated with a water supply system that had only two primary water pumps. These pumps were responsible for supplying water to various medical wards and an emergency water reservoir that was used during power outages or main water supply disruptions. However, the existing situation was inadequate, especially during periods of high demand or when water supply was disrupted. The system placed a heavy load on the pumps, which had to operate at full capacity more frequently, resulting in increased energy consumption, maintenance requirements, and reliability issues.
Solcon Industries Ltd Solution
Solcon Industries Ltd installed two additional water pumps controlled by four Optidrive ECO frequency inverters to manage supply while saving energy.
The Solcon representative shared insights:
“Optiflow technology ensures flexible pump control. Thus, when demand is low, it reduces the number of pumps required while ensuring continuous flow. Individual pumps do not have to operate at full capacity all the time, reducing energy consumption, water usage, and wear, which in turn reduces maintenance costs and downtime”.
Operating principle:
- There are four pumps in total controlled by frequency inverters.
- The first Optidrive ECO is the master controller, while the other three are slaves.
- The master controller manages and sets the speed and operating time for the slaves.
- The PID function of the ECO drives ensures that only the required number of pumps is active at any given time.
Results:
- Energy savings: Intelligent water pump control using Optiflow technology significantly reduced energy consumption. Pumps operated only when necessary.
- Reliability: the hospital now benefits from continuous and reliable water supply, with the system ensuring uninterrupted operation even if one pump or drive fails. This is essential for ensuring uninterrupted medical services throughout the hospital.
- Reduced maintenance and costs: by optimizing pump operation, the system reduced wear and tear, which in turn reduced maintenance requirements and associated costs. The intelligent system also protected against pump blockage and dry running, further reducing the likelihood of downtime.
- Efficiency: the system’s ability to intelligently manage water supply according to real-time demand streamlined operations, ensuring that the hospital’s water needs were met efficiently without overloading the infrastructure.
The successful implementation of Optidrive ECO frequency inverters not only solved the challenges associated with reliable water supply, but also set a new standard for energy efficiency and operational excellence. By using advanced technologies to optimize critical infrastructure, the hospital not only increased its capacity to serve patients more efficiently, but also demonstrated a commitment to sustainability and long-term cost savings.
