Frequency Inverters Ensure Smooth and Comfortable Elevator Operation in “MEZOLIFT” Elevators – Application Analysis

Problem

The revolutionary ”MEZOLIFT” elevator technology design – a solar lift – required an energy-efficient and compact Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) that would complement its innovative design. The challenge was to create an elevator system that would significantly reduce energy consumption and ensure smooth and reliable operation.

Solution

The Optidrive Elevator frequency inverter was chosen for its ability to meet these requirements, offering precise motor control, low energy consumption, and compatibility with photovoltaic systems. This solution allowed the solar lift to operate autonomously and efficiently, ensuring smooth travel through precise motor control and eliminating the need for extensive energy infrastructure.

When it comes to frequency inverters, it’s easy to imagine them hidden behind more “interesting” front-end equipment, performing important but largely unnoticed functions. However, Invertek Optidrive frequency inverters demonstrate how they are much better integrated into systems, helping to increase efficiency and save energy. This is the case with the innovative solar lifts – the first of their kind in the world – designed, manufactured, and installed by the Greek company Mezolift. Crucial to each unit is the Invertek single-phase Optidrive Elevator – a frequency inverter specifically designed to ensure smooth travel through precise motor control.

The compact external dimensions and factory parameter settings of the Optidrive Elevator are perfectly suited for simple elevators, allowing for quick and easy installation and configuration, while optional incremental/EnDat encoder feedback interfaces ensure compatibility with various motors. Extensive control capabilities ensure maximum ride comfort under all conditions, thanks to features such as five independent S-ramps and a dedicated motor brake control algorithm, enabling precise system tuning.

The Mezolift solar elevator, powered by the Optidrive Elevator, is a highly efficient traction elevator. Currently, it is primarily used in small apartments and homes up to four stories. However, expansion and adaptation for larger infrastructures are already included in future plans. Engineer J. Sachsamanoglou plans to further develop the technology, with the resonant name “Going Up?” intended for taller structures.

Since their introduction at the Thessaloniki International Fair in 2011, Mezolift solar elevators have impressed and received critical acclaim for their significantly lower energy consumption (80% less than conventional elevators), eco-friendliness, and the elimination of expensive, space-consuming machine rooms. Sachsamanoglou explains:

“Each elevator generates the necessary power and energy from a small autonomous photovoltaic unit. It is truly an energy-autonomous machine that can be used up to 30 times a day and operate for three days without recharging. Of course, due to our environmental stance, the elevator components, including Invertek frequency inverters, must also be environmentally friendly.”

”Mezolift” also claims it is the world’s first elevator whose energy consumption is managed by sophisticated software and an energy management system. A. Amiridis, Technical Director and Business Development Manager for Automation Experts in Northern Greece, highlights the impressively low standby consumption of the Optidrive Elevator, which perfectly complements Mezolift’s eco-friendly offering for demanding architects and developers. The standby power requirement for Invertek Elevator drives is less than 10 W, compared to 30 W typically required by other manufacturers’ VSDs under similar operating conditions.” “Furthermore,” Amiridis continues, “the software and parameter groups are easy to manage, and single-phase input operation means that Mezolift elevator drives can operate in various buildings, including those using domestic power supplies.”
